Acupuncture – Drug-free pain management

Pain management

Pain management is a branch of medicine that utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to reduce suffering and improve the quality of life.  According to the CDC, 20.4% of Americans live with chronic pain. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db390.htm

In most instances, we recognize chronic pain as physical injuries or illnesses which haven’t fully healed. Pains like lower back pain, chest pain, intestinal pain, shoulder or ankle pain are typical chronic pains felt by Americans. In order to alleviate these pains, modern day pain meds such as opiod Opioid analgesics, codeine, Opioids, and sufentanil are used.  These drugs are heavy and cause tremendous side affects and can cause dependency, which in all, can be more problematic than the original cause for the pain reliever.

There are, however, drug-free solutions available to manage pain.

One of these is the ancient practice of acupuncture.

Acupuncture – a drug-free solution

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine and a component of traditional Chinese medicine in which thin needles are inserted into the body. Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system, which, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.

The ancient practice of acupuncture started in China approximately 3000 years ago. The first documentation of acupuncture that described it as an organized system of diagnosis and treatment is in The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, which dates back to 100 BCE.

Acupuncture is known to help alleviate pain but here are three additional reasons to consider acupuncture:

  1. Stress reducer – Acupuncture reduces the stress hormone levels and improves mood by reducing feelings of anxiety and improving feelings of happiness.
  2. Sleep quality – Acupuncture benefits those struggling with insomnia, when the body’s energy is balanced, and nervous system is being properly stimulated the body and mind have more ability to fall asleep.
  3. Migraines – Acupuncture increases the flow of oxygen to the brain, which helps fight off migraines and headaches. Acupuncture is also known to reduce the pain during a migraine or headache.
