New York Treatment Options

The State of New York Office of Mental Health promotes mental health and wellness for all New York residents. Data from the Office of Mental Health indicates the state allocates almost $6.2 billion annually to mental health efforts across the state. Recently, the budget was increased to expand community services and help provide funding to transition individuals in treatment to more cost-effective community options.

Also, the Office of Mental Health has recently developed new mobile mental health crisis teams, created additional peer support services, and funded a broad expansion of supported housing statewide. The newly increased budget and these expansion services have allowed an additional 51,000 new individuals to receive treatment since 2015.

Each year the New York public mental health system provides mental health care to more than 800,000 people. The Office of Mental Health operates nearly 5,000 programs across the state. These programs fall into four categories: state-managed services (psychiatric hospitals), residential programs, adult non-residential programs, and programs specific to children and youth.

According to data from SAMHSA (The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), the most extensive demographic who received mental health help in NY throughout 2018 were adults ages 25-44. This age group accounted for approximately 31% of the total population served and was closely followed by adults ages 45-64 (28.4%).

Although women often struggle with addiction at a higher rate than men (based on national data), the statistics from New York indicate the ratio of men to women seeking treatment in New York is nearly equal 49.5% to 50%, respectively. Like many other cities and states across America, Caucasians (53.%) and Black/African American (24%) populations struggle with mental illness at higher rates than other demographics.

American Indian, Asian, and Pacific Islander demographics showed the lowest rates of mental health treatment, all falling below 2%; however, there could be several reasons for this. It is indeed possible that barriers to treatment such as availability, insurance coverage, stigma, community and religious belief, and societal expectation may limit treatment access for members of these demographics. Most New York residents seeking help to overcome mental health choose community-based programs and inpatient care or residential programs. A small portion received mental health services in a state hospital.

When reviewing current data, it is essential to remember that the state of mental health in many areas is declining. The COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges that have developed out of illness, ongoing isolation, and economic difficulties significantly worsened the mental health challenges faced by millions of people across the nation, including New York residents. In May of 2020, nearly 1/3 of New York residents reported experiencing anxiety or depression symptoms in the previous week. This represents a rate of roughly triple what was reported during pre-pandemic surveys. Although there are several mental health treatment facilities in New York, a large portion of the population who could significantly benefit from comprehensive mental health care do not receive the treatment they need to get well.

What to Look for in a New York State Mental Health Center

When you are ready to start your journey towards wellness at a New York State mental health center, there are several important qualities you should look for when choosing the best treatment option for you. Seeking help at a mental health treatment program that offers an appropriate level of care to meet your needs can lead to lasting freedom from mental health, addiction, or co-occurring disorder struggles. However, choosing the best mental health facility requires understanding the facility’s benefits and services and how they can meet your treatment needs.

First, it is important to choose a treatment center that provides the right level of care for you. There are several options for mental health treatment, including inpatient (residential) programs, partial hospitalization programs (PHP), Intensive outpatient programs (IOP), and outpatient programs. Inpatient treatment programs are generally the most intensive level of care, and outpatient programs are minimally intensive. Partial hospitalization programs provide a similar level of care to many residential programs without the requirement of “living” at the facility while completing your treatment program. Intensive outpatient programs or IOP’s generally serve as a stepping stone between an inpatient or partial hospitalization program and an outpatient program or returning home to your family and day-to-day obligations.

Because each level of care is different in intensity, required weekly treatment hours, and the total length of your program, it is essential to understand your specific treatment needs and how each level of care can help you achieve your wellness goals. If you are unsure which level of care is best for achieving your goals, contact us at Water Gap Wellness Center to learn more about how a mental health treatment program can help you put mental health challenges in the past.

It is also crucial to choose a treatment program at a mental health facility that provides a range of different therapeutic treatment models. Mental health treatment is highly beneficial and effective, provided your chosen mental health treatment center offers a model of care that can adequately address your treatment needs. When looking for a New York mental health facility, it is essential to choose a center that offers a range of evidence-based behavioral treatments such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). It is also important to look for programs that offer alternative therapy options such as equine-assisted therapy and others.

Also, choosing a program that addresses your treatment needs through individually designed assessment and treatment plans is crucial to achieving lasting freedom from your symptoms. Mental health challenges are highly personal and unique to the individual. Everyone with a mental health diagnosis, even if two people share the same diagnosis, will experience their symptoms differently. The most effective treatment programs are those that use thorough intake practices and individualized assessments to build a unique treatment plan for each patient who seeks help for their mental health or addiction.

There is no such thing as an effective cookie-cutter or one-size-fits-all mental health treatment program like treatment for substance use disorders. While some therapies are indeed more effective for some diagnoses than for others, it is still important to choose therapy models that fit the individual, not the illness. Your comprehensive treatment programs should consider your diagnoses, current physical health, underlying co-occurring disorders such as addiction, and your treatment needs and goals.
